Experian recently released its 2017 data breach industry forecast and has predicted that “Healthcare organizations will be the most targeted sector, with new sophisticated attacks emerging.” Experian believes that the healthcare industry is particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks because medical identity theft is highly profitable for hackers as well as easy to exploit as hackers keep finding markets in which to sell patient data.

Experian found that electronic health records remain a top target for hackers. Healthcare institutions are continuously deploying new mobile applications which may also introduce next vulnerabilities that hackers can take advantage of. Experian warns that healthcare institutions must have proper, up to date security measures in place which includes contingency plans for responding to ransomware and other cyberattacks as well as employee training.
